The Japanese Garden
On the move Originally situated in the hollow near the Mausoleum, the Japanese Garden was moved here.in the 1920s. The stone steps once led to a small tea house in the shape of an exotic Japanese temple. The steps themselves are modelled on those which led up to the Temple of Buddha in Nagasaki, Japan!

The Ha-ha
A ha-ha is a practical landscape design feature which became popular through the 17th and 18th centuries. The concept of the ha-ha is of French origin, an afchaic term for an unexpected obstacle Quebec, Canada, where the lake was impassable by canoe. Over the many years since it was established the ditch had accumulated large amounts of leaf litter and other detritus and some of the stonework had became dislodged and broken. So, in 2015, a programme to restore the ha-ha was initiated by staff and volunteer workers from Phoenix Futures, with support from North Lanarkshire Council’s Countryside Ranger Service and funding from the Landfill Communities Fund. Many hours and days were spent excavating the ditch and rebuilding the wall to reinstate this historic feature to its original condition.
